The Mena School Board conducted their annual Report to the Public meeting on Tuesday night. The evening began with a Facilities Meeting which included a one hour update on facilities, improvements & the five year plan. In total the district buildings include 430,000 square feet with a replacement cost of 71 million dollars. Improvements over the past year were reviewed as well as those on the horizon & additions to the five year plan. That was followed by the annual Report the the Public Meeting. Mr. Benny Weston began on the district financial status. The end of year balance was $4,185,544.06 which is set aside for emergencies & potential shortfalls. Weston went on to state that the district currently employs 229 people & that 67% of the districts students qualify for free or reduced meals. Paulette Sherrer spoke briefly on curriculum & testing. She shared a graph with those in attendance which show the students in the district are meeting or exceeding the national average. Louise Durham Principal Jimma Holder says that enrollment in kindergarten has increased to 170 students & that the number of students testing proficient & exceeding have increased. Principal Tamara Smart from Holly Harshman Elementary noted a gain in ACT Aspire scores in each grade. Mena Middle School Principal Cliff Sherrer reported a total of 400 students over the three grades. He is excited about the upcoming student council elections as MMS has not had a student council for a number of years. Sherrer also added that many improvements have been added to the science curriculum. 526 students are currently enrolled at Mena High School & Principal David Maxwell told the board that is an increase of 32 students. In addition he reported that students performed well above the state average on the Aspire testing & that he is planning to improve those scores even more. Maxwell also ran down a long list of concurrent courses which have been added at Mena High School. It was at this point in the meeting that a number of VIP's interrupted the meeting to award Superintendent Benny Weston with an award as the Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators. (see photos & details on our social media & website) Mrs. Bridget Buckley, MHS Assistant Principal & PCVA Director, reported an enrollment of twenty nine in the Polk County Virtual Academy & a positive response to a change in curriculum. Finally Mrs. Paulette Sherrer announced an increase in federal funding & an increase of fifteen students to the schools gifted & talented program. After a short break the September School Board meeting was conducted. It was a very brief meeting that included an executive session. Afterwards the board approved a one time bonus of $1,000.00 for Mr. Weston in recognition of his well-deserved accomplishment of Arkansas 2020 Superintendent of the Year. The School Board meets on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at the Administration Building.

Patriot Day is an annual observance on September 11 to remember those who were injured or died during the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001. Many Americans refer to Patriot Day as 9/11 or September 11. Patriot Day is not a public holiday. Businesses have normal opening hours. Patriot Day remembers those who lost their lives during the 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States. On the direction of the President, the flag of the United States of America should be displayed on the homes of Americans, the White House and all United States government buildings in the whole world. The flag should be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect to those who died on September 11, 2001. Many people observe a moment of silence at 8:46 AM (Eastern Daylight Time). This marks the time that the first plane flew into the World Trade Center. Some communities, particularly in the areas directly affected by the attacks, hold special church services or prayer meetings. People who personally experienced the events in 2001 or lost loved ones in them, may lay flowers or visit memorials. Patriot Day is not a federal holiday and schools and businesses do not close. Public transit systems run on their regular schedules. Some people and organizations may take some time out to hold prayers for the victims of the attacks, but these do not usually affect public life for more than a few minutes. On September 11, 2001, four planes were hijacked. The hijackers then deliberately flew three of the planes into two important buildings, the Pentagon in Washington DC and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York. The fourth crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The loss of life and damage that these hijackings caused form the biggest act of terrorism ever on United States soil. Nearly 3000 people died in the attacks.

Children & hydration Children are at a greater risk of dehydration than adults. This is because in relation to their size, children have a larger proportion of their skin available to lose sweat and be exposed to heat. Additionally, children don’t always recognize that they’re thirsty, and if they’re not encouraged and reminded may forget to drink. Luckily, there are a few ways to tell if your child is hydrated. How do I know if my child is hydrated? Frequent bathroom breaks or wet nappies are the easiest way to tell if your child is hydrated. You can also look out for these common symptoms of dehydration: Headaches Poor concentration Thirst Cracked lips Dry mouth Constipation Lethargy Dark urine How much water does my child need? The amount your child needs will vary depending on their age, size and level of activity. For children under 8 years of age, at least 4-6 glasses of water is recommended. For children older than 8 years of age a minimum of 6-8 glasses is recommended. If your child is playing sports or is very active they will need extra fluid, see our section on hydration for active kids. Kids will also need more fluid on hot days or when unwell. Tips to help your kids stay hydrated! Pack a water bottle for school and when you go out. Try a frozen water bottle in summer. Encourage your child to drink water before, after and during physical activity Always offer water with meals and snacks Encourage your child to drink water, even if they don’t like it! Tips for kids who don’t like water Try adding slices of fruits such as lemon or orange to water, for variety and flavour. Let your kids choose their own drink bottle or serve water in colourful glasses or jugs. Be a role model! Make a point of drinking water with your kids. Experiment with temperature; try having a jug of water in the fridge, adding ice-cubes, or even warm water in winter. Water is the best choice to keep your kids hydrated throughout the day. Water contains no extra energy and can quench your thirst. Other fluids such as milk, juice and sweetened drinks can also contribute to your child’s fluid intake. For more information on drink choices for your kids, check out the Drinks section of our website.

From Mena High School Principal Mr. David Maxwell! I want to thank each of you for a wondrous start to my 26th year, at a new campus with new teachers and staff and students. I truly have had a smooth transition from where I came from to here. With this being said, I also must ask for a few things from you the students: 1. Upper class men should know the handbook and its rules better than I ever would. Dress professionally, be clean and neat in your appearance, because you are setting an example for the freshman class and the middle school students that have the opportunity to come onto our campus. Some of you are going to have the opportunity to go and visit the other campuses in the future, and I want to remind you to be mindful of the example you set. Believe it or not, they look up to you. 2. I do not believe tank tops, sleeveless tops, etc., are allowed, so do not wear them. It is that simple. 3. Your class representatives to the student council and I have met on the handbook, and they are working on a proposal for you, the people they represent. I plan on meeting with them in September to see if we can modify the dress code to allow for different styles of clothing, but we have not made a decision yet, so all rules are still in place. Make sure you voice your concerns with your reps. 4. “If you wait to prepare for your future till you figure it out, you are not going to be ready”. Attend high school with a purpose. It is the greatest organization available for you to prepare for your “NEXT”. My office is open to you if you need to visit on anything. Drop by and see me!

In 2016 Bearcat Foundation, Inc. partnered with Mena Public Schools to develop a consistent, new funding program for all 13 athletic programs from 7th-12th grade. This allows coaches to supplement their school budget for much needed student expenses. Every team receives funds generated from membership and fund raising dollars. These funds can be used for team needs such as skill camps, equipment, Hudl annual fees, Platform workout, etc. On average, BFI has paid out a total of $18,000 each year distributed among the various athletic programs. In addition to the new funding BFI made a $125,000 capital improvement pledge to Mena Public Schools to be used for major facility/capital athletic improvements. To date BFI has donated $50,0000 for different needs over the last three years. BFI is now fulfilling the rest of the pledge by donating $75,179.83 to the Mena School District to be used toward stadium upgrades and improvements. Pictured above are BFI Board Members - Aarika Cox, Amy Hernandez, Gretchen Cannon, Mena Superintendent - Benny Weston, and BFI Board Members Mandy Godfrey and Ty Plunkett. This recent donation along with funds received from the Bob Carver Foundation and Union Bank will allow the district to modernize and provide safety upgrades to the Bob Carver Mena Bearcat Stadium. BFI board is very excited to be able to support our school and athletic program by filling a need. Our hope is to increase our support each year but need continued support from fans, parents and community. The Bearcat Foundation, Inc. was started in the summer of 2006 with a few simple hopes to help the Ladycats and Bearcats. BFI exists to support the student athletes and activities of the Mena School District by supporting programs, pursuing facility improvements and encouraging community spirit in an ultimate attempt to make our teams more competitive and increase moral, unity and school pride. Please visit www.bearcatfoundation.com for more information on how you can help and join BFI. We need you! #bearcatproud

42 Sports previews the 4-4A Football race for 2019! 4A Conference 4 is the next stop on our tour of conference schedules. Ozark and Dardanelle paced the conference in 2018 with 9-3 records. Mena won 8 games last season and has a new leader as Craig Bentley has taken over the team. Elkins was 7-4, while Pottsville fell to 5-6 but qualified for the postseason none the less. Dover, Waldron, and Subiaco Academy combined to win only 5 games, with the Trojans getting a new head coach in the offseason. Ozark, Dardanelle and Mena are all still looking to be the top teams in the conference while Elkins will look to keep up its positive momentum from 2018. Pottsville hopes to return to its pre-2018 form and a solid sophomore class could help. Dover also has a new head coach as Reed Mendoza takes over the team this season. Waldon will look to improve on its two win season in 2018 and Subiaco Academy will look to improve under new leadership.

Very strong result. The Sr. High JV finished runner-up in the top JV tournament bracket. The Jr. High varsity team won the top Jr. High bracket. This is the 2nd time in 3 years for our Jr. High to win the tournament. They defeated Camdenton Mo, Bentonville and Catoosa Mo. It is that time of year when we focus our efforts on securing Host Families for these Exchange Students who will be arriving in August. So, if you’ve ever considered hosting an international student, now would be a good time. Educatius International Host Families come in many different shapes and sizes - young couples with small children, single persons, one parent families, empty nesters, etc. The one characteristic all host families share is a big heart with a lot of love to offer a new family member! As a Host Families you will receive a $400 monthly stipend/student to help offset the expense of having a teenager in your home. All that we ask of our Host Families is that you provide a bedroom, meals, love and guidance and a place to study. You are not alone during this opportunity. It is my responsibility is to support the student, host family and school throughout the duration of the academic school year. We also have 24/7 national support. Our students come with their own insurance and spending money for; school lunches and school fees, personal items and activities they wish to be involved with. This is a wonderful opportunity to share Arkansas and the United States with a young person while you and your family learn about the student’s culture/country as well. A mock Code Blue was presented for the MASH Camp students today at MRHS. Code Blue indicates a medical emergency such as cardiac or respiratory arrest. CNO Rick Billingsley and ER Director Tony Tackett demonstrated life saving interventions for a Code Blue situation. The afternoon also included a very informative program presented by Bethany Hughes, New Vision Service Coordinator at MRHS. New Vision is an inpatient medical stabilization service for adults who are currently using or are experiencing acute withdrawal symptoms from certain drugs. Bethany shared the signs and dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, as well as tips for internet safety. Tony Tackett, ER Director, concluded today's camp with precautions regarding distracted driving. Three students from Mena High School are attending MASH Camp: Skyla Kim, Blake Castor and Gaven Hooper. https://www.facebook.com/Mena-Regional-Health-System-193747834492/

M*A*S*H students experienced several emergent scenarios today during camp. Survival Flight (Emergency Medical Air Transportation Services) landed at MRHS for a mock transport of a patient (MASH student). The flight nurse and paramedic shared life saving techniques for rapid medical services to preserve a patient's safety until they can be transported to the medical care they require. Following Survival Flight's departure, Southwest EMS volunteered to provide a mock arrival of a stroke victim. Sara Hale, MRHS Director of Quality Services, willingly served as a patient presenting with stroke symptoms. ER Director Tony Tackett demonstrated the AR Saves Stroke telemedicine program that links emergency room doctors to stroke specialists via live, two-way video. Proper steps must be taken before administering TPA, a clot-buster that dissolves blood clots obstructing blood flow to the brain. Three students from Mena High School are attending MASH Camp: Skyla Kim, Blake Castor and Gaven Hooper. https://www.facebook.com/Mena-Regional-Health-System-193747834492/

Shared from Coach Bentley's facebook page. Craig Bentley 1 hr · Wow! What a WILD 24 hours. To Mansfield: THANK YOU. You have welcomed my family into the school and community. You have supported every effort to build the football program up and help these kids succeed to the best of their ability! I am so thankful for the opportunity to work at such a great place. Thankful for the players(past and present) all the coaches, school board, administration , parents and community! Red Tiger football is on the rise and great things to come. To Mena: For as long as I've been coaching, I've wanted to be able to have the chance to lead the Bearcat football program. I bleed Bearcat red and black and always will. My family and I are so beyond excited to get back home. Mena is a special place, with special people! We are so lucky to be able to jump right back in to the community and get to work by continuing to build a program that players, coaches, the school and the community can be proud of! To me this is not just another job, it is "THE JOB"! Thank you to the administration and school board for giving us this opportunity! I can't wait to get to work and we are gonna hit the ground running! Go Bearcats!

The June Meeting of the Mena School Board was held at the Administration building on Tuesday night.... The board voted to approve KYLE CANNON as it's representative to the Arkansas School Board Association. The board also voted on it's annual restructuring. TODD AYNES will serve as President in 19/20. KYLE CANNON will serve as Vice President & EDD PUCKETT as Secretary. A transfer of $300,000.00 was approved from the operating fund to the building fund. This transfer will bring the district into compliance with ACT 1105 which obligates the district to lower it's legal balance to meet the June 30th state required legal balance of 20% of net revenues. The board approved the solicitation of bids on long term CD rates for $1 million currently in the disaster relief fund. These funds are currently in short term CD's to make them available should funds have been needed for the recently completed Louise Durham construction. Building & property insurance was renewed thru the ASBA Risk Management Program with an $18,735.38 increase. The increase was mainly due to the new construction at LDE. Rates for the Supplemental Student Accidental Insurance Policy remain unchanged at $33,868.00. The policy was renewed. DANNY MINTON gave a report to the board on construction & summer upgrades. At LDE work on the floors, painting & the playground continues. At HHE new LED lights have been installed & a new wall has been constructed for better access to storage. At MMS new LED lights have been installed in Jim Rackley Gymnasium. A sidewalk connecting the high school & middle school, near the ag building, has been completed. Striping on the front parking lot have been repainted & sheet rock repair has been completed at the MMS gym. At MHS the boilers have been serviced. The #'s on the main parking lot have been painted & a concrete access ramp has been poured at the field house. Several personnel changes were made. The board accepted the resignation of Tim Harper, Amanda Harper, Steve Breedlove, David Hampton, Aaron Pennington, Macklin Chermack,Melody Rowe, Thomas Powell, Hannah Powell & Lauren Quillin. Also approved was the transfer of Bridget Buckley to the position of Mena High School Assistant Principal & the hiring of Craig Bentley as Head Sr. High Football coach, Lauren Frost as High School Secretary & Sarah Bentley as 1st grade teacher
