Just a reminder that Mena Public Schools will be closed on Friday, October 16th. This is a vacation day for students & teachers. Mena Public Schools will be closed on Monday, October 19th. This is a virtual day for students. Meaning they will have assignments from their teacher to complete that day at home. This will be a day of professional development for teachers.. All on-site students attending school on Thursday, October 15 th will have a free breakfast and lunch (no refrigeration needed) sent home with them at the end of the day for our virtual day Monday, October 19th – NO NEED TO REGISTER Blended and PCVA students – please continue filling out the online meal form each week to receive your free breakfasts and lunches – NOTE – this week’s online form closes tomorrow, Wednesday, October 14th and pick up is Thursday, October 15 th between 1:00 – 2:00p.m.

The Annual MHS Blood Drive is happening today. Students who have signed up recently as well as staff are donating.

Congratulations to Mr. Charles Morgan for receiving the October Teacher of the Month Award at Mena High School. It was stated that Mr. Morgan spends countless hours working out the logistics of practices and performances. He always has a smile on his face, is highly motivated, and always pushes you to be your very best. Mr. Morgan is a great person and an amazing educator. The Fall Blood Drive is today in the Bearcat Den from 10:00 to 1:00. If any 9th or 10th grader is interested in Upward Bound, Please see Mrs. Thacker for an application. The Bearcat Marching Band will be participating in the Regional VIII Marching Assessment here at Bearcat Stadium beginning at 3:00 p.m. The event can be watched via Facebook Live on the Mena High School Facebook page. If you are interested in joining the National English Honor Society, please go by Mrs. Neufeld’s Room 207 to pick up an application.

ADMISSION TICKETS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED ON THURSDAY 10/15 FOR THE OZARK/MENA FOOTBALL GAME WHICH WILL BE PLAYED ON FRIDAY 10/16 AT BOB CARVER BEARCAT STADIUM. There will be a limited number of tickets available to the general public that can be picked up at the Central Office on Thursday 10/15 from 8:00am to 3:45pm. The visiting team and fans will enter the stadium through the large gate at the Northside of the stadium. The visiting bleachers have been marked off to ensure proper social distancing. Please wear your mask and social distance while attending the game Visiting fans must present their tickets and pay at the gate.

The Mena Basscats were in action Sunday on Lake Maumelle. This was the first Tournament of the season for Trader Bills High School Tournament Trail. This was the first time for the Basscats to compete on Lake Maumelle. Austin Rose and Jarrett Burger came in 8th place.

The Mena High School Band will compete in the Region VIII Marching Assessment on Tuesday. This year the judges will come to us. We will perform at Bearcat Stadium at 3:00 PM. It is open to the public following all social distancing guidelines as directed by AAA and ASBOA.

The Mena Jr. High & Sr. High Ladycats will play at Bauxite on Monday beginning at 4:00pm. GO LADYCATS!!!

Senior Morgan Puckett was crowned 2020 Mena High School Homecoming Queen at this afternoon’s homecoming ceremony at Bearcat Stadium. The honor of queen was selected based on the votes of all grades of the MHS student body.

Congrats Blake! Mena Coaches select #40, Blake Castor, as the Farm Bureau Insurance Player of the Game, for week #6 vs. the Pottsville Apaches. Blake is a 5'10", 210 lb, Senior, Defensive End, and his 9 tackles and 1 QB sack helped lead the Mena Bearcats to a convincing road win by a final score of 34-13. Castor was actually a two-way starter last Friday, as he also took over the Left Guard responsibilities on the offensive line. Blake is the son of Richard and Robin Castor, and the grandson of Phil and Mary Lou Brainerd and Danny and Becky Richardson, all of Mena. Blake says he enjoys playing volleyball when not in school and spends most of his Saturday nights playing poker with his friends. He plans to attend college, but is undecided as to a specific university at this time. He does however hope to become a Nurse Anesthetist, and spend his career in surgical medicine. The Mena High School Homecoming Caravan was held this morning. Students at all four Mena campuses had an opportunity to show their support. GO BEARCATS!!!

Announcements for Friday, October 9 th   I. In just a few minutes we will all be going outside to the bus loading area to cheer on the MHS Homecoming Court as they drive by. Because of social distancing requirements, there will be assigned areas for each grade. Your teacher will give your further instructions and Mr. Sherrer or Mr. Coogan will be outside to help. II. From Mrs. Sikes: FBLA members need to read your email from her that was sent yesterday afternoon.  She has posted something you need to complete this morning in the FBLA google classroom. III. Reminder: Next weekend is a 4-day weekend for Students. There will be no school on Friday, October 16 th or Monday, October 19 th . Though you will not be at school, that Monday is a “Virtual Day,” in which teachers will be sending you online assignments. IV. Students, if you are staying home because of sickness or any other reason, do not jokingly tell your friends that you have Covid. If we find this out, your parents will be getting a phone call from our District’s Contact Tracers. V. Reminder: Several of you are apparently forgetting that we are able to see everything you are doing on your school Chromebook or any other device that uses the school server. This morning during enrichment high school and middle school FFA members attended the monthly FFA chapter meeting in the agriculture building. During the meeting members got to learn about three Career Development Events they will have the opportunity to compete in during the spring semester. Today the officer team taught the members about livestock judging, veterinary science, and meats judging. Members had the opportunity to test their skills they would use in those events and had the opportunity to win some prizes as well!

Despite multiple efforts to locate a replacement game for Friday, we have been unsuccessful. There will be no replacement game for Friday night. Therefore the schedule for 2020 Homecoming activities on Friday, October 9th will be as follows. 9:00am – Caravan 2:00pm – Coronation of the court at Bearcat Stadium. This event will be open to Mena High School students & guest of those in the ceremony. The Queen & her court will be recognized at the next home football game.
