TECH college recruiter will be here on tomorrow during the JAG classes and during Enrichment for any senior not in JAG in the PAC.

The Mena School Board met for their September meeting on Tuesday evening in the Mena High School Library. The board unanimously approved the 2020—2021 operating budget. Including federal programs, VI-B & special education. They also unanimously approved the 2020-2021 Standards of Accreditation, the Polk County Virtual Academy Charter School Statement of Assurance as well as Resolution Act 1120. Superintendent Benny Weston then made the board aware of a bond sale which will take place in the near future. These bonds will receive an improved rate which will save the district money over the life of the bond. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lee Smith then recommended to the board that they accept a bid from Velocity Fusion for a new phone system for the district & new intercom system on three campuses. The cost to the district will be just over $119,000. The board voted to accept that bid. Graduation 2021 was next on the agenda & after a brief discussion a date of Saturday, May 22nd was approved. Each school board member is required to take 6 hours of training this year & they were made aware of 9 hours of training being made available in the month of October that they can take advantage of. The board quickly approved the financial reports. Under personnel. The resignation of Jessica Smith, from her position as Family & Consumer Science teacher, was accepted & will become effective September 30th. They then approved the transfer of Lauren Frost to that position from her current position as a secretary at MHS effective October 1st. Finally the board approved the drafting of a letter, to the faculty & staff at Mena Public Schools, expressing their deepest gratitude for the good job they have done under difficult circumstances this school year.

A good night for Mena Volleyball on Tuesday. The Ladycats sweep Boonevile! 7th grade won 2 to 0 Jr JV won 2 to 0 Jr Varsity won 2 to 0 Sr Varsity won 3-0 The Jr. & Sr. High teams will next play on Thursday at Fountain Lake. GO LADYCATS!!!!

Coaches have selected #7, Jacob Flemens, as the Farm Bureau Insurance Player of the Game for week #4, vs. the Booneville Bearcats. Jacob is the son of Jerry and Michelle Flemens and is a 5’6’, Senior, wide receiver / cornerback. Despite Jacob’s 5 receptions for 60 yards in the game, Mena fell to a very well-conditioned Booneville team, by the final score of 43-12. This was Mena’s third loss of the season. Jacob’s hobbies, when not in school, include a lot of hunting or fishing and just being outdoors. In fact, he plans to attend Arkansas Tech University after High School and obtain a degree in Biology. He hopes to go to work for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission after college, as either a Game Warden, or in a Biologist position. This week, Jacob and the Mena Bearcats will take the short road trip, north, to Waldron and face a much improved Bulldog team, that currently stands at 3-0 for the year. According to Mena Head Football Coach Craig Bentley Waldron will only be selling tickets to this Friday's game at the gate on a first come first serve basis. There will be seating available in the visitor stands for 128 fans. All additional fans will have to stand or are welcome to bring lawn chairs or something else to sit on.

The Mena Sr. Girls flew past a 9 win Paris team 3-0 Monday at the Union Bank Center. The Sr. JV also won 2-0. The teams will host Booneville tomorrow 9/22 with games beginning at 4:30pm.. GO LADYCATS!

1. MHS flu shot clinic will be held the morning of Oct 15th in the Bearcat Room. If MHS blended/virtual students would like to get flu shots at school, please pick up a paper form or e-mail the school nurse at bobbi.baker@menaschools.org. The forms must be returned by Oct 2nd. Flu shot forms out to all traditional students and staff this week and next. 2. MHS blended/virtual students may request a hearing and vision screening by making an appointment with the school nurse, M-F 8am-3pm.

Virtual, blended, or non-enrolled students have to sign up for meals every week. Meals may be picked up at Louise Durham Elementary or Mena High School on Fridays between 1 and 2pm.
