UCA GirlsCode Summer Camp sponsored by the College of Education and the STEM Institute:
Budding computer scientists entering grades 5 to 8 may attend {GirlsCode}. Campers will have opportunities to explore computer programming and robotics while developing their computational thinking and problem solving skills. Sample projects include: unplugged coding escape room, block-based coding for Sphero and Lego Mindstorms robots, and Swift and Scratch programming.

Mena MIddle School announcements for Monday, April 1st
Today is the 141st day of school with only 37 school days remaining.
Right after these announcements, 8th grade ETS students will be meeting in the Choir room.
From Mrs. Breedlove: Any 6th grader who signed up for next year’s 7th grade squad has a mandatory parent meeting this evening at 5:30 in the MMS Library. Also, the 7th grade and JH cheerleaders will be having a bake sale at Walmart this Saturday.

Thursday: High School Girls & Boys soccer teams will be hosting Malvern at 5:00.

This sums up the wave that is moving across Arkansas in regards to The Right To Read Act 1063 requiring Arkansas educators to achieve levels of proficiency and awareness in the knowledge and practices of the science of reading.
Mena School District Dyslexia Coordinator, Vicky Maye shares that our school is committed to making preventative curriculum changes with whole group and small group instruction to put the science of reading in motion to close the gap in literacy achievement for our struggling readers. We are teaming with Winsor Learning’s Sonday System which is an Orton Gillingham Reading Intervention System that provides multi sensory tools and training to help equip our educators to become master multi sensory instructors who can use daily instruction to wire and train our students’ brains to successfully read.
Our administration has been willing to go above and beyond to make the much needed changes to move forward with closing the literacy gap in our school. I’ve worked closely with our federal coordinator, Paulette Sherrer; building principals Jimma Holder, Tamara Smart, and Clifton Sherrer, our LEA-Laura Bunch for special education and our teachers to get these changes in motion. It’s got to be a team approach with everybody being a stakeholder and having ownership in making the very most of our investments in our students!
Pictured is Winsor’s Educational Consultant, Kristen Koeller leading this initiative with Mena teachers representing K-8th regular education and special education teachers and dyslexia paraprofessionals. Koeller will provide continuous support with this endeavor. Maye shares that it’s important to keep Sally Shaywitz’s words in mind as our mission, “.....the struggling reader needs someone who will not only believe in him but will translate that belief into positive action....and then actively and relentlessly work to ensure that he receives what he needs.”

Mena Middle School. Mena High School & Holly Harshman Elementary students welcomed home KRISTA CARSTENS & celebrated her 2 World Olympic Game medals. Krista is the only athlete from the State of Arkansas to participate in the World Games held in Abu Dahbi,Dubai.

Monday, April 1st – Next Year 7th Grade Cheer Leaders will need to bring an Adult with them to a MANDATORY Meeting at 5:30 in MMS Library.
Tuesday, April 2nd – 6th Grade Musical will be performed in the High School PAC at 7:00. Donations are appreciated.
April 17th – Parent Teacher Conferences in MMS Cafeteria ( 3:30 – 6:30)
April 18th – If you are interested in participating in the MMS Talent Show, please sign up in Mrs. Lunsford Classroom by April 18th. Try-outs will be on May 2nd and the MMS Talent Show will be May 16th.
April 19th – NO SCHOOL
April 30th and May 1st – ACT ASPIRE TEST – Please do not make any Dr Appointments on these dates. Very important that your child is at school for the test.
