Reminders:  School pictures are next Tuesday  Check out Mrs. Rose’s Google Classroom if you are interested in joining the BADD Club  Immunizations are required one week from today  II. Students, we are starting to have a problem with some of you wanting to share your food with other students. Under the current guidelines for schools, you are not allowed to do this. Please do not share food or drinks with other. III. Yesterday during lunch, several of you had to be told to put your mask on. Some of you have been told several times. All of you have read and signed the Covid 19 policy agreement which detailed the rules for masks at school. Follow these guidelines or we will begin contacting parents. Also, the flu is already starting to appear in our community. IV. Flu shot forms were handed out yesterday. If you were absent or you need a form, there are extras in the front office. V. The FBLA Fall Conference date has been changed so registration is open again if you would like to attend. The new deadline is Oct 2nd! Cost is $15 to attend and receive an FBLA t-shirt FCCLA dues are $15 and need to be paid by October 8. Bring your dues to Mrs. Hobson or Mrs. Wilson. Congratulations to Mrs. Patricia Jackson for receiving the September Teacher of the Month at MHS. Mrs. Jackson’s students have described her as compassionate, understanding, helpful, and inspiring. Her classes are fun and she has never-ending energy to motivate her students to do their best and succeed. Mrs. Wilson’s Orientation to Teaching and Child Care Guidance Classes have chosen one teacher or faculty member to honor each month. Mrs. Jackson will receive a certificate and a sweet treat from Sassafras Cakery. Anyone interested in joining Sci-Fi Club this year, there will be no dues this year, just sign up with Ms. Hooker to join! Even Blended students will have access to the Google Classroom. Our next meeting is tomorrow, Wednesday, in the PAC during Enrichment. All Juniors and Seniors who need help signing up for the October ACT need to go to the cafeteria during enrichment today . TECH college recruiter will be here on tomorrow during the JAG classes and during Enrichment for any senior not in JAG in the PAC.

The Mena School Board met for their September meeting on Tuesday evening in the Mena High School Library. The board unanimously approved the 2020—2021 operating budget. Including federal programs, VI-B & special education. They also unanimously approved the 2020-2021 Standards of Accreditation, the Polk County Virtual Academy Charter School Statement of Assurance as well as Resolution Act 1120. Superintendent Benny Weston then made the board aware of a bond sale which will take place in the near future. These bonds will receive an improved rate which will save the district money over the life of the bond. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lee Smith then recommended to the board that they accept a bid from Velocity Fusion for a new phone system for the district & new intercom system on three campuses. The cost to the district will be just over $119,000. The board voted to accept that bid. Graduation 2021 was next on the agenda & after a brief discussion a date of Saturday, May 22nd was approved. Each school board member is required to take 6 hours of training this year & they were made aware of 9 hours of training being made available in the month of October that they can take advantage of. The board quickly approved the financial reports. Under personnel. The resignation of Jessica Smith, from her position as Family & Consumer Science teacher, was accepted & will become effective September 30th. They then approved the transfer of Lauren Frost to that position from her current position as a secretary at MHS effective October 1st. Finally the board approved the drafting of a letter, to the faculty & staff at Mena Public Schools, expressing their deepest gratitude for the good job they have done under difficult circumstances this school year.

Mena Golf is competing in the District Golf Meet at Malvern today!!!

A good night for Mena Volleyball on Tuesday. The Ladycats sweep Boonevile! 7th grade won 2 to 0 Jr JV won 2 to 0 Jr Varsity won 2 to 0 Sr Varsity won 3-0 The Jr. & Sr. High teams will next play on Thursday at Fountain Lake. GO LADYCATS!!!!

Coaches have selected #7, Jacob Flemens, as the Farm Bureau Insurance Player of the Game for week #4, vs. the Booneville Bearcats. Jacob is the son of Jerry and Michelle Flemens and is a 5’6’, Senior, wide receiver / cornerback. Despite Jacob’s 5 receptions for 60 yards in the game, Mena fell to a very well-conditioned Booneville team, by the final score of 43-12. This was Mena’s third loss of the season. Jacob’s hobbies, when not in school, include a lot of hunting or fishing and just being outdoors. In fact, he plans to attend Arkansas Tech University after High School and obtain a degree in Biology. He hopes to go to work for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission after college, as either a Game Warden, or in a Biologist position. This week, Jacob and the Mena Bearcats will take the short road trip, north, to Waldron and face a much improved Bulldog team, that currently stands at 3-0 for the year. According to Mena Head Football Coach Craig Bentley Waldron will only be selling tickets to this Friday's game at the gate on a first come first serve basis. There will be seating available in the visitor stands for 128 fans. All additional fans will have to stand or are welcome to bring lawn chairs or something else to sit on.

The Mena High School Blood Drive is October 13th !

School day pictures with Lifetouch will be on Monday, September 28, for grades 9, 10, and 11, as well as faculty. This will be the only school picture day Lifetouch plans to offer to Mena High School this year, so we need everyone to be at school that day to get their photo taken for the yearbook. School pictures at MMS are Tuesday 9/29. Picture forms will be given out today during ACHIEVE. You are not required to order or purchase pictures, however, everyone will have their photo taken for the yearbook and to have a photo on file for ID cards. Picture day at HHE is Thursday, October 22nd. Picture day at LDE is Wednesday, October 21st.

If parents know their students are going to be out for an extended amount of time please come and pick up their chrome book so they can continue their school work & won’t get behind in classes.

Announcements for Tuesday, September 22 nd   I. If you have to take a test for Covid, you are not allowed to come back to school until you receive the test results. You must bring your negative test results to the office on the day you return. II. Any 6 th , 7 th , or 8 th grader that has been on a Quiz Bowl team and still wishes to compete, will need to go to the Cafeteria immediately after these announcements to meet with Mrs. Sims. Remember to social distance when you find a seat. III. Tutoring is now available in the MMS Cafeteria. Make sure your parents know what time tutoring ends and that they pick you up on time. The schedule is as follows:     Monday through Thursday - 3:30 - 4:30  Monday night - 5:30 - 6:30  Please use the front entrance to Middle School. ** Students, you are not allowed to hang around the school waiting for tutoring to begin. Mena Volleyball will play Booneville today at the Union Bank Center. Games begin at 4:00pm. GO LADYCATS!

The Mena Sr. Girls flew past a 9 win Paris team 3-0 Monday at the Union Bank Center. The Sr. JV also won 2-0. The teams will host Booneville tomorrow 9/22 with games beginning at 4:30pm.. GO LADYCATS!

70+ Mena High School Seniors are having their pictures taken by Prestige today.

1. MHS flu shot clinic will be held the morning of Oct 15th in the Bearcat Room. If MHS blended/virtual students would like to get flu shots at school, please pick up a paper form or e-mail the school nurse at bobbi.baker@menaschools.org. The forms must be returned by Oct 2nd. Flu shot forms out to all traditional students and staff this week and next. 2. MHS blended/virtual students may request a hearing and vision screening by making an appointment with the school nurse, M-F 8am-3pm.
