Announcements for Friday, September 25 th
I. We will be conducting a Tornado Drill today near the end of 3 rd period. Today’s drill will be
for 6 th grade only. The alarm for a tornado is 3 short bells, repeated 3 times. When you
hear this alarm, 6 th grade students and staff will evacuate to the MMS Safe Room. Be sure
and look at the Tornado Evacuation Route Map posted in your 3 rd period classroom.
II. Students, if you have to go home with a fever, you are not allowed to return to school until
you have been fever – free for at least 24 hours.
III. Reminders:
School pictures are next Tuesday
Required immunizations must be completed by next Thursday, October 1 st .
Flu shot forms are available on a table outside of the front office.
IV. Students, if you are not feeling well, please let your teacher know so that the nurse can be
contacted. Several of you have used your phones during class to text a parent, asking
them to check you out. Do not risk losing your phone privileges by doing this. You must
be seen by the nurse before a call home is made.
V. From Mrs. Sikes: Any 7th or 8th grade student interested in joining FBLA needs to go to
her room after these announcements.

The Jr. Bearcats lost to Waldron by a score of 0-42 at Bearcat Stadium Thursday. Mena will host Pottsville on October 1st.

The Mena 7th Grade Bearcats defeated Waldron 38-0 at Bearcat Stadium Thursday. The team will be back in action October 1st when the play Pottsville. GO BEARCATS!
Representatives from the Dequeen Mena Educational Service Cooperative are working with teachers at MMS & MHS today on technology related questions. They will be on campus at HHE & LDE on Friday. Mena teachers are always looking for ways to improve & make the learning experience as good as it can be.

Immunizations are required one week from today
II. Students, we are starting to have a problem with some of you wanting to share your food
with other students. Under the current guidelines for schools, you are not allowed to do
this. Please do not share food or drinks with other.
III. Yesterday during lunch, several of you had to be told to put your mask on. Some of you
have been told several times. All of you have read and signed the Covid 19 policy
agreement which detailed the rules for masks at school. Follow these guidelines or we will
begin contacting parents. Also, the flu is already starting to appear in our community.
IV. Flu shot forms were handed out yesterday. If you were absent or you need a form, there
are extras in the front office.

The Mena School Board met for their September meeting on Tuesday evening in the Mena High School Library.
The board unanimously approved the 2020—2021 operating budget. Including federal programs, VI-B & special education.
They also unanimously approved the 2020-2021 Standards of Accreditation, the Polk County Virtual Academy Charter School Statement of Assurance as well as Resolution Act 1120.
Superintendent Benny Weston then made the board aware of a bond sale which will take place in the near future. These bonds will receive an improved rate which will save the district money over the life of the bond.
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lee Smith then recommended to the board that they accept a bid from Velocity Fusion for a new phone system for the district & new intercom system on three campuses. The cost to the district will be just over $119,000. The board voted to accept that bid.
Graduation 2021 was next on the agenda & after a brief discussion a date of Saturday, May 22nd was approved.
Each school board member is required to take 6 hours of training this year & they were made aware of 9 hours of training being made available in the month of October that they can take advantage of.
The board quickly approved the financial reports.
Under personnel. The resignation of Jessica Smith, from her position as Family & Consumer Science teacher, was accepted & will become effective September 30th. They then approved the transfer of Lauren Frost to that position from her current position as a secretary at MHS effective October 1st.
Finally the board approved the drafting of a letter, to the faculty & staff at Mena Public Schools, expressing their deepest gratitude for the good job they have done under difficult circumstances this school year.

teacher for an order form.
II. Please make sure that you keep your Chromebook in your backpack to protect it from the
rain when you’re waiting in the bus line or car rider line.

School day pictures with Lifetouch will be on Monday, September 28, for grades 9, 10, and 11, as well as faculty. This will be the only school picture day Lifetouch plans to offer to Mena High School this year, so we need everyone to be at school that day to get their photo taken for the yearbook.
School pictures at MMS are Tuesday 9/29. Picture forms will be given out today during ACHIEVE. You are not required to order or purchase pictures, however, everyone will have their photo taken for the yearbook and to have a photo on file for ID cards.
Picture day at HHE is Thursday, October 22nd.
Picture day at LDE is Wednesday, October 21st.
Announcements for Tuesday, September 22 nd
I. If you have to take a test for Covid, you are not allowed to come back to school until you
receive the test results. You must bring your negative test results to the office on the day
you return.
II. Any 6 th , 7 th , or 8 th grader that has been on a Quiz Bowl team and still wishes to compete, will
need to go to the Cafeteria immediately after these announcements to meet with Mrs.
Sims. Remember to social distance when you find a seat.
III. Tutoring is now available in the MMS Cafeteria. Make sure your parents know what time
tutoring ends and that they pick you up on time. The schedule is as follows:
Monday through Thursday - 3:30 - 4:30
Monday night - 5:30 - 6:30
Please use the front entrance to Middle School.
** Students, you are not allowed to hang around the school waiting for tutoring to begin.

Several of you are still being dropped off at the front entrance of the school. THIS IS NOT ALLOWED. If you are a car rider, you must be dropped off in the designated area in the back parking lot.

1.Bring a water bottle or container with a lid so that you can use the water fountains.
2.Immunizations are required by October 1st – that’s only 9 days from now.
3.Return any library books that you might have at home from last year.

A few of you have been taking your school-issued Chromebooks outside before school and at lunch and using them. Keep them put away in your backpack because we’ve had a couple of them damaged while outside.
This is a reminder that especially with the social distancing situation we are in, there needs to be no tackling, wrestling, hugging, etc. This is starting to become an issue, especially outside before school and during lunch.
