Several Mena Bearcats are among the statistical leaders this season according to Max Preps. Austin Rose is 3rd in the state in passing. Rose has completed almost 70% of his passes for 558 yards in the first two games. Caleb Peters is 7th in the state n receiving. Peters has 14 catches for 203 yards thru two games. Jarrett Burger is 13th in the state in tackles. Burger has a total of 21 tackles in the first two games. Mena FFA had 8 FFA members who exhibited livestock last week at the 2021 Polk County Fair. These FFA members showed their animals last week with great success! Thursday, September 9, 2021 Clubs & Activities: Thursday - a college rep from the Southern Arkansas University (SAU) is in Room 403 today during enrichment for any senior who is not in Mrs. Purvis’ JAG classes; Quiz Bowl Practice will be on Wednesdays and Thursdays at high school. Friday - FBLA meeting in Room 401 - Bring money for District Conference if you are wanting to attend. Sports: Thursday - Jr. High Football will play @ Clarksville MHS Golf will play at Malvern, Volleyball @ Camden Jr. JV, Jr. V, Sr. V Friday - Sr. Football @ Hot Springs The early bird registration deadline for FBLA district conference is this Friday (earlier than previously announced). If you want to wear the new District FBLA t-shirt to the conference and not business attire, please bring your registration money to the meeting tomorrow. The FBLA meeting will be in Room 401. To be able to attend the district conference, you must also be a current FBLA member. There is a QR code outside Room 202 to sign up using a Google Form and the $20 dues can be given to Mrs. Torix at any time. Students, please be aware that once you enter the gate for home football and volleyball games, you are not allowed to leave or go to the parking lot and come back into the facility. Once you leave the gate, you are making the decision to leave the ball game for the night, and you cannot pay to re-enter either. We are forming a chess club. There is a google classroom that students can join. We are still in the planning stages. Please see Ms. Smith in room 104 for more information. Students, you can purchase your homecoming dance tickets with Mrs. Ashcraft. Tickets are $10 each. The dance will be Saturday evening, September 25, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. This year we are happy to announce we are able to provide you with after school library hours and tutoring. The schedule for this is: Monday: Mrs. Hooker 3:30 to 7 pm Tuesday: Mrs. Hoyle or Ms. Catlett 3:30 to 7 pm Wednesday: Ms. Ashcraft 3:30 to 6 pm Thursday: Mrs. Hoyle or Ms. Catlett 3:30 to 7 pm Saturday: Mrs. Hoyle or Ms. Catlett 9:00 to 12:00 This is time that you can use to study, gather for a group meeting, use our new makerspace, or get help with assignments. If you sign up for it before the end of school, snacks will be provided. Saturday tutoring must be signed up for by Friday, the google form can be found in your “Class Of…” Google Classroom. Math tutoring will be each morning from 7:15-8:00, and each Monday- Wednesday after school until 4:15. Ms. Hendrix will be tutoring after school on Thursdays until 5:15. If you would like to be in the school play, The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood, come by Ms. Kropp’s room 201 and pick up an audition paper. The play is open to all MHS students. Auditions will be tomorrow from 4-6 in the MHS PAC. Anyone who would like to join FCCLA please see Mrs. Wilson or Mrs. Hobson. Dues are $15 and can be paid anytime this month. If you are interested in joining the art club this year, our first meeting will be this Friday, September 10th! Come to the art room during Enrichment to learn more about the club and all the fun things we have planned for this year! For anyone interested in joining the Sci-Fi Club, please contact Ms. Hooker either in person or by email to be added to the Google Classroom. Our first meeting isn’t until October 8th so this is the best way to get club information before the first meeting. There will not be a face to face meeting to express interest. Mena High School Student Council is selling the official 2021 Homecoming Tee this year! The cost will be $12 per shirt and we have youth sizes Small-Large and adult sizes Small-6X available for order! MMS ANNOUNCEMENTS Wednesday, September 8 th I. Reminder: Parent / Teacher Conferences and your first mid-term grades are one week from today. Under our current situation, conferences will not be held on campus. Parents will be receiving a phone call from teachers that evening to discuss your progress and grades. II. MMS Dance: We plan to hold our dance next Tuesday evening (weather permitting). If you have a song request, write the song title and your name on a sheet of paper and turn it in to Mrs. Rose this week. III. From Mrs. Sikes: Reminder: Deadline to join FBLA and attend the Fall Leadership Conference is this Friday, September 10. All forms and money must be turned in to Mrs. Sikes by the end of the week. IV. From Mrs. Sims: Quiz Bowl practice will begin next week during ACHIEVE. 6 th grade Quiz Bowl will practice on Mondays, 7 th / 8 th grade will practice on Tuesdays. Practice will take place in the Conference room next to Mrs. Rose’s office. On those days, stay in your ACHIEVE class until the end of announcements. V. You have probably noticed that we are now offering a 2 nd chance breakfast between 1 st period and ACHIEVE. You do need to know that if you already had a school breakfast earlier in the morning, you will be charged for getting another one from the cart. The cart is located outside the front office. VI. Mena Sr. Volleyball played Malvern at the Union Bank Center on Tuesday. The score was 25-21, 25-23 & 25-5. The Ladycats improve to 4-0 & will plat at Camden Fairview on Thursday.

Mena Coaches select #33, Jayden Felix, as the Farm Bureau Insurance Player of the Week vs. Clarksville. Jayden is a Junior running back / linebacker for the Bearcats. He had 1 receiving touchdown and 1 rushing touchdown with over 100 all- purpose yards on offense and 2 tackles for loss, defensively. His efforts helped lead the Bearcats to a comfortable 38-14 victory over the Panthers. Mena’s off to a great start, at 2-0 for the year! Jayden is the son of Walter and Misty Felix and is one of eight children, having 2 brothers and 5 sisters. His hobbies are primarily football, off season conditioning, and X-Box games. After graduation, Jayden hopes to continue to play football at the college level, as he pursues a degree in Accounting. This week, Mena will travel to Hot Springs to take on the Hot Springs High Trojans, who currently stand at 1-1 for the season. Mena lost a close game to the Trojans last year and Jayden and the Bearcats will be up for a little payback come Friday night. Tuesday, September 7th Mena Cross Country will compete in their first meet of the season at the Tom Stuthard Stampede in Acorn starting at 3:30pm. Jr. & Sr. Volleyball will host Malvern at the Union Bank Center beginning at 4:00pm.

Mrs. Ford's and Mrs. White's third-grade classes at HHE enjoyed a "Book Tasting" today. Students were given the opportunity to sample some juicy reads. They were introduced to different authors, genres, and series. We love reading!

MHS/MMS Choir Teacher Lana Coogan & MMS Principal Todd Coogan educated her students in the art of vocal performance with guitar accompaniment on Friday.
