The Student Mock Voting Day for the 2020 election will be today, October 26th. Students taking history classes will vote during their history class. If you do not have a history class, the form will be available in your “Class of ..” google classroom during Enrichment. This will be the equivalent of what Arkansas voters are voting for with national, state, and local positions and ballot issues.

Students bringing lunch from home must take all three in order to be free.

The Bearcat Cross Country Team is scheduled to compete in the 7-4A District Meet at the Lions Club Course in Mena at 10:00am!!! GO BEARCATS!!!!

Announcements for Monday, October 26 th   I. 1 st Quarter report cards will be handed out today during ACHIEVE. II. After these announcements, the 6 th grade Quiz Bowl team will be meeting in the conference room. III. From Mrs. Lunsford: The 7 th grade Cheerleaders will have a group photo for the yearbook this Thursday during 7 th period. Bring your uniform to change into. IV. We have had a problem lately of someone opening the handicap access door to Mrs. Farringer’s room during 6 th grade lunch. This is a reminder that we have video cameras in each hallway and will use it to determine who is doing it, if it happens again. VII. Lunchtime Weather: If we have to say inside for lunch today…  After eating your lunch, please leave the cafeteria and go sit in your grade-level hallway.  You are not allowed to use your phone / device until you have left the cafeteria and are in the hallway. Mena outlasted Dardanelle 36-13 on a cold Friday night at Bearcat Stadium. The game was tied at half but Mena scored 23 unanswered in the second half. An open date is on the schedule next week & the Bearcats will play Lamar in the final regular season game on Friday 11/6.

All fourth graders in Mrs. Sterner’s and Mrs. Golden’s Social Studies classes, at Holly Harshman Elementary, exercised their right to vote. Their week began with the introduction of two parties, Fruity and Chocolate. A primary election was held, where they voted for the “Candy-Date” of their choice. Hershey’s Chocolate Bar was voted to represent the chocolate party, while Ring Pop was voted to represent the fruity party. Students learned about the election process, rules of voting, and all about the two current Presidential candidates. On Friday, October 23rd, each student entered the polling booth to cast their vote!

Friday, October 23, 2020 Dear Parents & Students The Mena School Board recently approved a change to our Ready for Learning Plan that I want to inform you of. It is the implementation of a 4:1 school week with a Flex Friday option beginning on Friday, October 30th. What does this mean? School will operate just as it is now for four days per week. On Flex Friday, school will be open, lunch will be served, and assignments will be given but the day will be optional for all students to attend in person or not. On Flex Friday, students who choose to flex will log into their classroom assignments given by their teachers and do their learning at home. Students who choose to attend school will also have virtual assignments for that day and will have an adjusted schedule to accommodate their online assignments and to give their teachers time to help blended students and plan for the upcoming week. Students who choose to learn from home on the Flex-day will not be counted absent. Instruction will be 100% virtual. These are catch-up days for teachers and students: there will be no new content taught or major assessments given. When will this start? Friday, October 30th How long will this go on? Indefinitely, we will continue to monitor the needs and concerns of our students, teachers and parents and adjustments could continue to be made throughout the school year. What if I don’t have internet access? Many of the assignments for Flex Friday may be assigned earlier in the week and students will have an opportunity to work on them using the school internet. We also offer tutoring Monday through Thursday after school till 4:30 (and Monday evenings 5:30-6:30) at school. The Flex Friday is an option to stay home but school will be open to those students that need to attend. Your student will be receiving an email with a questionnaire about Flex Friday. Congratulations to second grade teacher, Mrs. Shannon Miller. She was the winner of the Arvest Bank's "WE LOVE TEACHERS" campaign! We are so proud of her and lucky to have such a wonderful teacher!

Blended & virtual student meals for October 26th-October 30th may be picked up today at Louise Durham Elementary or Mena High School between 1 and 2 pm.

The Mena 7th Grade & Jr. High Bearcats played at Dardanelle on Thursday. Dardanelle won the 7th Grade game 18-8. Dardanelle won the Jr. High game 31-0. Both teams will play next on October 29th when Mena host Trinity Christian.

There will be a limited number of tickets available to the general public that can be picked up at the Central Office on Friday 10/23 from 8:00am to 3:45pm for the Bearcat football game on Friday. The visiting team and fans will enter the stadium through the large gate at the Northside of the stadium. The visiting bleachers have been marked off to ensure proper social distancing. Please wear your mask and social distance while attending the game. Visiting fans must present their tickets and pay at the gate.
