The deadline to submit an entry for the judged competition will be Wednesday, October 23. The trip is open Creative Writing and NEHS students. See Mr. Philpot for information and to express an interest in attending. AE will be hosting a food drive for God’s Feeding Hands Ministry October 14-November 15. If your Enrichment class elects to participate, please bring a canned good to your Enrichment class. The class that donates the most, will receive a pizza party provided by AE. Girls can sign up for a Powder Puff Football Tournament in Ms.Hobson’s room. Each class will have a team and compete against each other on November 4th. The cost is $3 to play and all proceeds go to Relay for Life. Independent Living Class will have a Bake Sale on Friday -- Cake Balls and Brownies --- Come support our athletes and enjoy a treat before the 3 day weekend!!! The Mena Realtors will be having a fundraiser for Special Olympics on Saturday from 10-2 at Atwoods!!! Hot dogs and drinks...There will also be Special Olympic Shirts for $5.00 each… Art Club will be this Friday in the Art Room (Rm 404), please pay your dues as soon as possible to attend. Congratulations to the Mena Bearcat Marching Band! They received a First Division Superior Rating at the Region VIII Marching Assessment in Fort Smith Tuesday!

The Mena School Board held their October meeting Tuesday evening at the district administration building. The lack of a quorum prevented the board from voting on items on the agenda & those were postponed until the November meeting. Mr. Benny Weston began the meeting with the superintendent's report. He mentioned that several district leaders, including himself, recently had a meeting with the state regarding minimum wage & new teacher pay requirements. The district now has specific guidelines to follow & Weston felt positive the district is in good shape regarding those changes. Weston also stated that the district has met with two phone companies & has a third scheduled to discuss a new phone system on each campus. Investigation also continues into the viability of a solar energy system & two solar companies have weighed in so far. The bulk of the meeting was taken up by the ESSA Report which was recently released by the Arkansas Department of Education. The Principal from each campus gave a report on their score & where they thought improvements could be made. Mr. Danny Minton gave an update on projects. The district recently completed an environmental safety & also the 3 year asbestos inspection. The district passed both & met state regulations. The floors at Jim Rackley & the Union Bank Center are scheduled to be resurfaced before the end of October. Construction on a visitors side press box at Bearcat Stadium should begin in two weeks. Menton gave an update on repair to a damaged section of the floor in the high school safe room & a quote of $7995.00 has been received on the addition of more handrails at the Union Bank Center. Finally the board was told of the resignation of Carol Sproles from the MMS Staff.

Mena volleyball played at Arkadelphia Tuesday. 7th grade won 3 to 0 Junior High JV won 3 to 0 Junior High Varsity won 2 to 0 & the Senior High Varsity won 3-0 Mena will play Magnolia in the UBC on Thursday. Go Ladycats!

Mena Middle School FCCLA and FBLA as well as Mena High School FCCLA attended CTSO leadership day at the Arkansas State Fair today.

Mena Jr Volleyball played at Mansfield on Monday. The 7th grade won 2 to 0, the Jr JV lost 0-2 & the Jr varsity won 2 to 0. The Jr High Ladycats will play at Arkadelphia Tuesday 10/15 at 4pm. Go Ladycats!

Three members of the Mena tennis team competed in the state tournament at Clarksville Monday. Will Davis lost to Heath Hickles from Pottsville 2-6,0-6 and Stephanie Lua and Marissa Ortiz lost to Heshmat and Tan from Pulaski Academy 1-6,2-6 .

The Bearcat Marching Band competed in the Arkansas Showcase of Bands Saturday in Little Rock. Esmerelda Johnson won Outstanding Soloist for Class 4A Overall Band Rating: 1st Division Drum Major Faith Chaney: 1st Division Percussion: 1st Division Color Guard: 2nd Division GO BEARCAT BAND!

The Mena Ladycats finished as runner-up in the Paris Lady Eagle Invitational Saturday. They defeated Booneville, Pulaski Academy, Southside Batesville, Greene County Tech & Fountain Lake before falling to Paris in the finals. Mena will play at Arkadelphia on Tuesday 10/15. GO LADYCATS!
