Dear Principal Sherrer and Superintendent Weston, Congratulations! MENA MIDDLE has been recognized by the Office for Education Policy (OEP) at the University of Arkansas as a school where students demonstrated high growth on the ACT Aspire! The OEP creates an annual report entitled the Outstanding Educational Performance Awards where we recognize schools with high student academic growth. We think growth is the best indicator of the positive impact that your school is having on students. In our Middle School Level report which will be published tomorrow, MENA MIDDLE received the following award: High Overall Growth: Middle Level (Southwest Region) A personalized paper award will be sent to the district later this school year. Awards are based on the 2019 content growth score calculated by the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education. These growth scores reflect how much students at the school improved from 2018 compared to how much they were expected to grow considering prior achievement. We recognize schools based on Overall growth, as well as for growth in Math and English Language Arts separately. To learn more about how we determined the OEP award winners and to see the full list of award recipients, you can view the report here. We congratulate you on this accomplishment and hope that you will share this good news with teachers, students, and others who contributed to your school’s success. We find that local papers and social media are effective in spreading the news of your school’s success to the community. ***Stay tuned as we will be High School level awards next week!*** Congratulations again on your OEP Growth award! Sincerely, Sarah McKenzie, Ph.D. Executive Director Office for Education Policy 211 Graduate Education Building Fayetteville, AR 72701

Announcements for Wednesday, October 23rd Students, you need to remember that you must have money in your meal account in order to get extras. This applies to breakfast, the 2nd chance breakfast cart, and lunch. Your newly-elected Student Council met for the first time yesterday. One of the topics they addressed was the problem with trash and trays being left outside – especially during Lunch “B.” They came up with another course of action to see if it will help. So, for now, there is no ban on taking food outside. However, starting today, the next time there is a problem with trash and trays being left outside, instead of a ban on outside food, students will be banned from using their phones and devices during lunch for a period of time to be determined. Reminders: All Red Ribbon Week Committees will meet with Mrs. Rose on Friday during ACHIVE FBLA & FCLA will have group photos taken for the yearbook this Friday. The Jr High Bearcat Football teams will be hosting the Waldron Bulldogs this Thursday at Bearcat Stadium. The Mena School Board held their October meeting Tuesday evening at the district administration building. The lack of a quorum prevented the board from voting on items on the agenda & those were postponed until the November meeting. Mr. Benny Weston began the meeting with the superintendent's report. He mentioned that several district leaders, including himself, recently had a meeting with the state regarding minimum wage & new teacher pay requirements. The district now has specific guidelines to follow & Weston felt positive the district is in good shape regarding those changes. Weston also stated that the district has met with two phone companies & has a third scheduled to discuss a new phone system on each campus. Investigation also continues into the viability of a solar energy system & two solar companies have weighed in so far. The bulk of the meeting was taken up by the ESSA Report which was recently released by the Arkansas Department of Education. The Principal from each campus gave a report on their score & where they thought improvements could be made. Mr. Danny Minton gave an update on projects. The district recently completed an environmental safety & also the 3 year asbestos inspection. The district passed both & met state regulations. The floors at Jim Rackley & the Union Bank Center are scheduled to be resurfaced before the end of October. Construction on a visitors side press box at Bearcat Stadium should begin in two weeks. Menton gave an update on repair to a damaged section of the floor in the high school safe room & a quote of $7995.00 has been received on the addition of more handrails at the Union Bank Center. Finally the board was told of the resignation of Carol Sproles from the MMS Staff.
